Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located near the charging place. The route to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never permit objects like for example lighters or matches to be used while someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
